Background of Indiana Convention Center

Indiana Convention Center is located in downtown Indianapolis containing over 120,000 square meter of space for meetings/conventions with huge 50,000 square meter open exhibition space and almost 13,000 square meter of groups meeting space.

Its original structure was completed in 1972 and on its first opening the Indiana Convention Center had three main halls for exhibition. Its eastern portion has the large 500 ballroom; meeting rooms and other support facilities are also available.


Expansion in ICC in 1983

The first expansion of Indiana Convention Center completed in 1983 with total cost of around $82 Million provided by both public and private partners. Exhibition halls E & D were also added at that time and number of other facilities were also renovated in this expansion. After this major expansion, number of other expansions taken place and further halls, facilities, ballrooms and spaces were added along Maryland Street.

Expansion in ICC from 2006 – 2011

The most recent and significant expansions in Indiana Convention Center had taken place in this time period. In the expansion spree of this time interval, the Lucas Oil Stadium was first constructed in the south of OLD RCA DOME and it was open for public in August 2008.

It’s a multi-use, all weather venue that offers almost 180,000 square feet of exhibition space, huge seating for games, concerts, meetings and retractable roof.  An underground climate-controlled walkway was also constructed along the west side of Capitol Avenue to directly connect the newly built two-story building of Convention Center to the Lucas Oil Stadium.

Public tours for Lucas Oil Stadium are also available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, lasting an hour. Tourists can visit playing field, locker room, Lucas Oil Plaza, Stadium’s press box and number of other areas that you would not typically see.


It was all completed in January 2011 by Ratio Architects, Inc. Ratio Architects was the leading firm for the expansions work of Indiana Convention Center, assisted by number of local Indiana firms.
